In celebration of our 65th anniversary, the UNA-Canada Edmonton Branch in collaboration with MacEwan University is planning a public celebration and panel discussion on Canada’s Role in Achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

On September 6-8, 2000, leaders from across the world gathered at the Millennium Summit to discuss how the UN could help shape the 21st century. From the discussions, the UN Millennium Declaration was ratified, and eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were established. These goals range from eradicating extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education – all by the target date of 2015.

Canada was one of the first countries to support the MDGs. With 2015 just around the corner, how effectively is Canada working towards the MDGs nationally and internationally? Our invited panelists will provide insight into how Canada is fairing on their commitment to the MDGs and discuss issues including equal access to education, empowering women, ensuring sustainable development and ending poverty.

Attendees will have opportunities to ask questions to the panel and to contribute their ideas as to what the United Nations post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals should be. Photos and ideas collected at our photo booth will be put in a special commemorative photo book that will be given to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon!

  1. I commend the Edmonton Branch of UNAC for being such a vital pioneer in building the public wing of the UN. Eleanor Roosevelt would be very pleased that when she came through Edmonton around 1949 to initiate the UN associations, that Edmonton has been such an indominable base for the goals of the UN.

There are so many things that need to be worked on to accomplish the UN’s potential. Developing the Duty to Protect and the removal of genocide promoting Islamic cults, through international special forces, is urgently required. Developing the Pyramid 2030 project – that was formed at Rio + 20 for the purpose of creating international efforts at reaching ecological and social goals over the next 16 years requires coordination and raising of consciousness in all regions.

The World Movement for the Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World and its Six Points of the Culture of Peace is a legacy of UNESCO’s work on transformative habits that can lead to replacing war and violence with the tools of peace. This must not be left to languish in obscurity.

We in the Okanagan have a Pyramid 2030 group, and we would be very interested in discussing what may be achieved over the next few years with the Edmonton Branch of UNAC.

    Best regards,
